Emmerdale broadcast a deeply unsettling episode on Sunday night, featuring the sexual assault of Charity Dingle by Dr Caitlin Todd. Viewers were left feeling physically ill and uncomfortable after watching the harrowing scene.
Dark Turn in Blackmail Plot
Over recent weeks, Dr Caitlin Todd has been extorting money from Charity Dingle, promising to keep secret that baby Leyla is not Sarah and Jacob's child. The storyline took a sinister turn during the rare Sunday installment.
Charity has been struggling under the immense pressure of her secret being exposed, turning to alcohol as Dr Todd's demands escalated. The situation worsened when Todd arrived at Charity's home, finding her asleep on the sofa after finishing a bottle of wine.
Disturbing Assault
Dr Todd leaned over Charity and sneered: "Wake up. Drunk, disgusting w****! One too many? Bad, bad girl. You should know better... than to lose control." The horrific assault began as Todd unzipped Charity's trousers, waking her to the horrifying reality. Charity begged Todd to stop and sat up, trying to process what had just happened.
In upcoming episodes, Charity will struggle to cope with the attack, facing the difficult choice of confiding in loved ones or internalizing the trauma.
Viewer Reactions
Fans took to social media to express their discomfort. @emmerdale2dae wrote: "I admire Emmerdale for tackling such a huge storyline but it was such an uncomfortable watch... Todd is beyond sick." @meeshyjay added: "I don't think Dr Todd can sink any lower ffs i feel sick." @bagflea75 commented: "That was really uncomfortable, it felt like you were witnessing something rather than just watching."
Trigger Warning and Producer's Statement
Before the episode aired, Emmerdale issued a warning on social media: "In today's episode, Emmerdale will show scenes depicting sexual violence that viewers could find distressing."
Producer Sophie Roper explained the storyline's importance: "Charity's storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence... we'll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman. With little conversation surrounding female-on-female assault, we'll explore the overwhelming feelings of isolation many survivors experience."
Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, said: "This has been one of the most demanding and significant storylines I've had to navigate as Charity... I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV and is available to stream on ITVX and YouTube from 7am.
