Strictly Come Dancing Star Ellie Goldstein Performs at Royal Palace Event

Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Goldstein brought her dance talents to St James's Palace this week, performing for the Duchess of Edinburgh at a special afternoon tea event. The model and actress, who made history last year as the first Strictly contestant with Down's syndrome, took to the dance floor with her professional partner Vito Coppola in a royal setting.

A Royal Invitation and Afternoon Tea

The Duchess of Edinburgh hosted the afternoon tea at St James's Palace, where Ellie Goldstein and Vito Coppola delivered a memorable performance. Ellie, who attended the event with her mother Yvonne, described the experience as "amazing" and noted that the Duchess asked numerous questions about her time on the popular BBC dance competition.

"It means so much to be recognised by a member of the royal family," Ellie said. "I'm proud to show that people with a learning disability can achieve their dreams and to never give up what they want to do."

Breaking Barriers and Challenging Perceptions

Ellie Goldstein's appearance on Strictly Come Dancing last year was groundbreaking, with Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh and patron of the charity Mencap, sharing a video message during the final that praised Ellie's impact in challenging societal perceptions. As a Mencap Myth Buster ambassador, Ellie continues to advocate for greater inclusion and understanding.

Vito Coppola, her dance partner, reflected on their collaboration, calling it "an incredible experience" and saying he had gained a "little sister for life." He emphasized the importance of adaptive teaching methods, stating, "Everyone learns differently and dancing with someone who has a learning disability means thinking outside the box and understanding how to communicate and teach in the best way that works for them."

Celebrating Influence and Driving Change

The event also celebrated Mencap's 80th birthday this year, with chief executive Jon Sparkes among the guests. He highlighted how Ellie's influence is "helping to drive lasting change in attitudes and expectations" across the country.

"It recognises not only Ellie's talent and determination, but the way she has challenged assumptions and opened hearts and minds across the country," Sparkes said. The performance at St James's Palace underscores the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and recognition for individuals with learning disabilities in high-profile settings.
