Adrian Edmondson made an emotional admission about mortality during the latest episode of Sam & Ade Go Birding on Channel 5. The actor, known for his role in Bottom, opened up about thinking about the end of his life while birdwatching along the Norfolk coast with Samuel West.
Reflections on Life and Death
While taking a break from their "wild goose chase," the pair sat in a car overlooking the coast. Edmondson shared, "I do have some connection with this part of the world, and it always makes me think of my mortality these days." He recounted how his suit makers, a couple from Holt who ran a company called Old Town, retired and closed the business. After ordering three extra suits, he told the owner, "I think that'll see me out." West responded with surprise, "Oh, Ade," as Edmondson added, "You do start to think about the end."
Samuel West's Personal Loss
West then revealed that his mother, Prunella Scales, had died a week earlier, one day after what would have been her 62nd wedding anniversary. He described attending a tribute where West End theatres dimmed their lights, an event that "really floored me." West recalled a final conversation with his mother, who asked her age and, upon being told 91, exclaimed, "91? F***." He noted, "It was beautifully timed, beautifully enunciated. We had a few more conversations after that, but that may be the last one I remember." Edmondson remarked, "Well, that's good to have in the memory," and West agreed, adding that he inherited his love of the outdoors from her.
Sam & Ade Go Birding returns next Tuesday on Channel 5.
