Denise Welch Celebrates 14 Years of Sobriety After Overcoming Alcohol Addiction
Television personality Denise Welch has reached a significant personal milestone, marking fourteen years without consuming an alcoholic drink. The Loose Women panellist openly discussed her past struggles with alcohol, which led to severe blackouts and contributed to arguments and fights within her relationships.
Instagram Tribute to Husband and Sober Journey
Sharing a reflective post on Instagram, which included a throwback photo alongside a recent image, Welch praised her husband, artist Lincoln Townley, for his transformative role in her life. Townley, who also maintains sobriety, reached fourteen years without alcohol in February. Welch expressed profound gratitude, stating that meeting him fundamentally altered her path.
In her heartfelt caption, she wrote: "Today I celebrate 14 yrs since I had my last alcoholic drink. Not even a sherry trifle... although I did have a rum and raisin ice cream in Italy last year but luckily remained sober!!! I cannot imagine what my life would be like had I not met @lincolntownley."
Reflections on Alcohol's Impact and Recovery
Welch elaborated on the destructive effects of her drinking, noting that while alcohol initially facilitated their meeting in a nightclub, it subsequently caused numerous problems. She described experiencing blackouts, making terrible decisions, and engaging in arguments and fights, all exacerbated by alcohol and drugs. Welch explained that she was attempting to self-medicate a severe mental illness, which proved ineffective.
Although neither she nor Townley attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, Welch recalled a poignant piece of advice from someone involved in AA: "You have a problem with alcohol when your drinking is making you and the people who love you desperately unhappy." She affirmed this resonated deeply with both of them, acknowledging their luck in having each other as anchors throughout the challenging recovery process.
Welch emphasised that while AA serves as a vital lifeline for millions, their personal journey relied on willpower and mutual support. She highlighted the positive outcomes, including a strong marriage and providing their children with a stable environment free from the worry and embarrassment associated with their previous lifestyle.
Life After Alcohol: Renaissance and New Challenges
Now approaching 68, Welch described experiencing a personal renaissance, enjoying life more than ever. She has several acting projects lined up for the year and takes pride in her husband's artistic achievements, including his exhibition at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, she expressed joy over their children's successful careers and the arrival of a new grandson.
However, Welch also disclosed a subsequent struggle with food addiction, attributing it to her addictive personality. After quitting alcohol, she found herself bingeing on food, eating secretly, and hiding chocolate, behaviours reminiscent of her drinking habits. She realised this when she gained two stone in a relatively short period, which affected her appearance and breathing, particularly noticeable during television appearances.
A pivotal moment occurred during a theatre production in Kingston, where a fall led to a diagnosis of osteoarthritis, with a doctor advising weight loss. This prompted Welch to address her health, leading her to lose the excess weight. Subsequently, she applied cognitive behavioural therapy techniques to quit smoking, a habit she had maintained since age sixteen.
Welch concluded by reflecting on the absence of guilt and shame in her current life, able to reminisce about past experiences with humour rather than regret. She affirmed that life is now profoundly good, marked by sobriety, family happiness, and professional fulfilment.
