Erin Doherty, best known for playing Princess Anne in Netflix's The Crown, has revealed a surprising connection to comedian Romesh Ranganathan. The 33-year-old actress disclosed that Ranganathan, now 47, was her head of sixth form at Hazelwick School in Three Bridges, where he worked as a maths teacher.
Doherty made the confession during a joint interview with co-star Malachi Kirby to promote season two of Disney+ series A Thousand Blows. She recalled being called into a meeting with 'Mr Ranganathan' alongside her father after she was removed from English Literature for failing to read the required books.
'You know the comedian Romesh Ranganathan? He was my head of year. How cool is that?' Doherty said. 'So yeah he was like a maths teacher but I never had him for maths. My sister did. But he was my head of sixth form, my head of year.'
When asked if she had met Ranganathan since both became famous, Doherty replied: 'No and I want to! But yeah it's kind of cool.' The actress is currently promoting the second season of A Thousand Blows, which follows the true story of Jamaican immigrant Hezekiah Moscow in 19th-century London's bare-knuckle boxing world.
Hazelwick School has produced several other notable alumni, including footballer Gareth Southgate, broadcaster Dan Walker, and singer Chico.
