Wrexham's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a major blow after a 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday. The result leaves Wrexham in the relegation zone with only two games remaining, three points adrift of safety.
Blackburn's victory was crucial in their own battle for survival, moving them four points clear of the bottom three. Goals from Sam Gallagher and Ben Brereton Díaz in the first half sealed the win for Rovers, who now look likely to secure their Championship status.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed disappointment after the match, acknowledging that his team's fate is no longer in their own hands. 'We need results to go our way now,' he said. 'It's a tough one to take, but we have to keep fighting.'
The defeat means Wrexham must win their remaining matches against Oxford United and Leicester City while hoping other results favour them. Their goal difference is also inferior to rivals, making the task even more difficult.
Blackburn, meanwhile, can breathe easier after a run of three wins in four games. Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson praised his side's resilience: 'The players showed great character tonight. We knew it was a must-win, and they delivered.'
