Coleen Nolan has revealed she is making urgent diet and lifestyle changes to avoid developing type 2 diabetes after being diagnosed with prediabetes. The Loose Women star, 58, had blood tests following a serious chest infection and was told she was at high risk of the condition.
Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage and blindness. Coleen said: 'I was one-and-a-half marks off being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It was a shock but, looking back, I hadn’t been feeling myself for some time.'
She experienced abnormal fatigue and skin infections that healed slowly. Medics said she can reverse the condition through lifestyle changes. Coleen has cut out unhealthy snacks like chocolate and crisps, and now eats a healthy plant-based diet at home, prepared by her vegan daughter Ciara. She is also planning to exercise more, including walking her dogs and using the hotel gym when working in London.
Coleen is determined to be fit for her UK tour and has a check-up in three months. She said: 'Life has given me a chance to turn things around and reverse the prediabetes, and maybe I’ll even get a few extra years. I’m going to do my best.'
