Clive Davis, the legendary music executive and founder of Arista Records and J Records, has died at the age of 94. The music icon passed away at his home in New York City on Monday, according to reports in Rolling Stone.
His death was confirmed by his longtime representative Aliza Rabinoff, who stated that Davis "passed away peacefully from age-related illness … surrounded by his family and loved ones." Davis had faced several health issues in recent years, including being hospitalized in May due to an upper respiratory issue. In 2021, he was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.
Career and Legacy
Davis was instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous iconic artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, and Carrie Underwood. He founded Arista Records in 1974 and later J Records in 2000, cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in the music industry.
Among those paying tribute was songwriter Diane Warren, who wrote on Instagram: "Dear Clive, losing You today feels like losing my father. Because you were always family to me. It was my Dad who believed in me in the very beginning, it was you who never stopped believing in me." She added, "Without You I would never have the career I have. I know that. I will always cherish our friendship. No one will ever come close to what You have achieved. No one. Ever."
Final Public Appearance
Davis made his last public appearance in New York earlier this year, attending The Gordon Parks Foundation Awards Dinner and Auction 2026 on May 19. His death marks the end of an era for the music industry, with countless artists and songwriters crediting him for their success.
