Chet Hanks Appeals for Help After Passport Mishap Leaves Him Stuck in Colombia
The son of Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, Chet Hanks, has publicly appealed for assistance after finding himself stranded in Colombia due to a critical travel document error. The 35-year-old musician and actor, who gained notoriety for his "White Boy Summer" declaration in 2021, took to Instagram over the weekend to explain his predicament to his followers.
Spontaneous Trip Leads to Passport Predicament
Hanks revealed that he had been in Puerto Rico attending a friend's birthday celebration when he made an impulsive decision to visit another friend in Medellín, Colombia. The journey, however, has resulted in an unexpected bureaucratic nightmare that has left him unable to return to the United States.
The crucial mistake occurred when Hanks traveled with only his Greek passport, despite holding dual citizenship. His parents, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, were naturalized in Greece in 2020, granting Chet Greek citizenship. He explained that his American passport was nearly expired, so he opted to travel using his Greek documentation instead.
Airport Revelation and Desperate Plea
Upon arriving at the airport for his return flight to the United States, Hanks received troubling news from immigration officials. He was informed that he would need a green card to enter America with a foreign passport, despite being a natural-born American citizen. This requirement has effectively trapped him in Colombia until the situation can be resolved through proper channels.
"I literally have no idea what I'm gonna do," Hanks confessed in his social media post. "And the only embassy to get this settled is in Bogotá. I don't want to go to Bogotá, so yeah. Free me."
The distance between Medellín and Colombia's capital city Bogotá is approximately 250 miles by road, or a one-hour flight, presenting an additional logistical challenge for the stranded celebrity.
Fan Reactions and Cast Away Comparisons
In the comments section of Hanks' Instagram posts, most followers showed little sympathy for his self-inflicted travel dilemma. The actor himself acknowledged there were "worse places" to be stranded, but that didn't stop the internet from having its fun with the situation.
One commenter suggested, "The one time you should've pulled the 'my dad is...' card," referencing his famous father's potential influence. Others predictably shared GIFs and references to Tom Hanks' iconic role in the 2000 survival film Cast Away, which depicts a man stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash.
Family Business and Nepotism Defense
Chet Hanks is one of two sons from Tom Hanks' marriage to Rita Wilson. Tom Hanks also has two other children, Colin and Elizabeth, from his previous marriage to Samantha Lewes. The Hanks family has frequently addressed questions about nepotism in Hollywood, with Tom Hanks previously defending his son's career path.
"Look, this is a family business," the elder Hanks has stated. "This is what we've been doing forever. It's what all of our kids grew up in. If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point."
He emphasized that regardless of family connections, "the thing that doesn't change no matter what happens, no matter what your last name is, is whether it works or not. We have to do the work in order to make that a true and authentic experience for the audience."
Tom Hanks recently appeared in the music video for his son's song "You Better Run," which featured an extended parody of the 1994 Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump, further highlighting their collaborative family dynamic in the entertainment industry.
