Cheryl Hines Questions Timing of Chelsea Handler's 'Toxic' House Allegations
Cheryl Hines has publicly addressed comedian Chelsea Handler's recent claims about purchasing a "disastrous" Los Angeles home from Hines and her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In a new podcast interview, Hines expressed scepticism over Handler's timing, noting the allegations emerged five years after the $5.9 million property sale.
Hines Challenges Handler's Narrative on Podcast
During an excerpt from the upcoming Tomi Lahren is Fearless podcast, obtained by People magazine, Hines questioned why Handler is only now complaining about the house. "You have to question the timing of it, because she bought this house five years ago and she's just now complaining about it," Hines stated. She added that Handler's story "doesn't really hold water" and doubted it would garner much public sympathy.
Hines confirmed that she and Kennedy wrote a personal note to Handler when she moved into the Brentwood home in 2021, offering assistance and leaving her contact number. "If we were trying to unload a toxic house on her, I wouldn't have left my number," Hines asserted, suggesting this action contradicted Handler's accusations of deceit.
Handler's Original Allegations of a Toxic Environment
Earlier this month, on her Dear Chelsea podcast, Handler described the house as having "the most toxic environment," claiming a home inspector advised she could not live there for at least two years. She alleged undisclosed issues, including an illegal outdoor storage unit, and criticised the property's foundation. Handler also mocked Kennedy's role as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, calling him "the embodiment of everything that is wrong with this administration."
Handler recounted multiple renovation efforts but said she has been unable to reside in the home. She responded sarcastically to Hines's note, quipping, "How about a foundation? That's something you could do for me."
Hines Accuses Handler of Attention-Seeking
Hines concluded that Handler's motives were likely driven by a desire for attention and humour. "She's trying to get a laugh, I guess, and some likes," Hines said, implying the claims were exaggerated for entertainment value. She suggested it was "probably fun" for Handler to mock Kennedy amid ongoing political controversies.
Property records confirm the sale occurred on October 14, 2021, with the home purchased via a trust under Handler's sister's name. The 1937-built property features five bedrooms, a pool, and a spacious backyard in the Mandeville Canyon neighborhood.
