Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh singer known for her powerful voice and hits like 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' has died at the age of 75. Her family confirmed the news on her official website early Thursday morning, prompting an emotional tribute on BBC Morning Live.
Family Statement Confirms Death in Portugal
A statement on Bonnie Tyler's website read: 'Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.' The statement added: 'We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.'
The singer had been hospitalized and placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery. Her spokesperson had previously confirmed she came out of the coma but remained 'very unwell and in intensive care.'
Morning Live Presenters Break the News
During a segment on insect bites, presenter Gethin Jones, joined by Kimberley Walsh, interrupted the show to share the 'sad' breaking news. Gethin said: 'Ranj, we'll come back to you in just a second to talk about insect bites. Just hearing some breaking news this morning. Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart has died at the age of 75.'
After reading the family statement, Gethin added: 'Sad news,' as Kimberley called her a 'legend.' Gethin recalled meeting Bonnie during the Queen's Jubilee in Swansea, saying: 'She walked out and everyone just stopped. She had the most infectious, energetic personality, when it just lifts everyone.' Kimberley praised her 'incredible' voice.
Friend's Earlier Health Update
A friend of the singer, Liberto, had previously provided updates on Good Morning Britain. He revealed that Bonnie started feeling unwell during a concert in London, and after traveling to the Algarve, she experienced severe abdominal pain. Her appendix had burst, requiring emergency surgery. Liberto noted that her husband, Robert Sullivan, had been by her bedside constantly.
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with hits like 'It's a Heartache' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' which became global anthems. She sold over 100 million records worldwide and represented the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
