The BBC has quietly released a new series of its hit under-the-radar comedy Funboys, and fans are urging everyone to binge it. Created by Rian Lennon and Ryan Dillon, the show first aired on the BBC in 2025 with a four-episode debut following a quirky group of characters navigating life in rural Northern Ireland.
What Is Funboys About?
The synopsis reads: 'From first loves to dead pet pigs, life in rural Ballymacnoose isn't easy for these sad worms. Can the emotionally constipated lads get it together?' The series has been described as a 'weird, charming' comedy. One Reddit user, immaxpower, called it a 'mix between The Inbetweeners and This Country.'
Critical Acclaim
The Guardian praised it as 'some of the most fearless comedy in years' upon its debut and awarded the second series, also four episodes, a five-star review, calling it a 'gleefully silly and laugh-out-loud sitcom.'
Fan Reactions
Fans have been enthusiastic. Mydeamonisabadger called it 'such a cracking wee show!' Comet-lobster agreed, saying, 'Really liked it, definitely a similar style of humour to This Country. Characters were great, and definitely one of those shows that's decent for a rewatch.' Queasystick4881 labeled it a 'must-watch,' noting it is 'so very daft and funny' with a 'sad, dark and weird' energy. Another fan, 3t283h0rus, added, 'Love Funboys, feels like one of those shows that absolutely nobody I know has seen. Wonderfully silly and charming.'
New Episodes Feature Steve Coogan
The new episodes also include comedy legend Steve Coogan, adding to the appeal. To give an idea of the show's absurd humor, in the first series, a naked Callum (Ryan) is on all fours smoking a spliff from his bottom while his ex-girlfriend's brother David (Jamie Demetriou) comforts him with back rubs and verbal assurances.
Behind the Scenes
Speaking to Metro about filming that scene, Ryan said: 'Having a joint in my ass was the worst. It was cold, it was a bad position, just everything. Jamie totally supported me through that. He was saying: "It's okay, don't worry, you're doing great."'
Funboys is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
