Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has expressed agreement with Sir Idris Elba's stance that James Bond should not be made 'woke'. Speaking after a major speech in central London outlining plans to overhaul equality law, Badenoch told journalists: 'I agree with Idris Elba that we should not make James Bond woke, because that will ruin really the entire franchise.'
Badenoch's stance on creative decisions
She emphasised that the decision rests with the writers and rights holders, with the public delivering their verdict through ticket sales. 'I believe in capitalism. That's the way that it should work,' she added.
Idris Elba's perspective
Sir Idris, who was long rumoured to be in contention for the role of 007, told British GQ that while he was 'complimented' by the speculation, it was 'never legit'. He noted that some global audiences may not accept a black Bond due to cultural preferences, stating: 'In realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that.'
The actor stressed the importance of maintaining Bond as escapism: 'Don't try and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond.' He argued that while a hint of reality is welcome, the franchise should not be made 'woke'.
Political context
Badenoch's comments come amid her broader push to reform equality laws, positioning herself as a defender of traditional values against what she perceives as excessive political correctness.
