Former BBC presenter Amanda Byram has candidly admitted that she is "feeling unsteady" about her return to television screens, marking her first professional appearance in almost five years. The 52-year-old star, best known for co-hosting the popular show Total Wipeout alongside Richard Hammond, stepped back from her career in 2021 to welcome her first child, a decision that reshaped her life and priorities.
A Journey Back to the Camera
Amanda Byram took to Instagram to share her mixed emotions ahead of a filming day in London, her first shoot since 2019. She wrote, "Morning all! So I'm feeling a bit unsteady today, heading to London on a train for a filming day – my first shoot in almost 5 years!" Reflecting on her last time in front of the camera, she noted it was during a #FoodUnwrapped episode when she was seven months pregnant with her son Phoenix, never imagining she would take such an extended break from on-screen work.
Motherhood and Career Sacrifices
The presenter has been open about her struggles with IVF, which led to the birth of her two "miracle" sons. After welcoming her first child, she felt it didn't "feel right" to be apart from him, even if it meant pausing the career she loved. She explained, "After my baby boy arrived, it just didn't feel right to me to be away from him for a single second, even if it meant not doing the thing I loved, something that was sewn into my sense of identity for most of my adult life!"
When her second son, Jett, was born in February last year at age 51, she anticipated a similar pattern. However, a recent opportunity from Comic Relief prompted her return. She shared, "A few weeks ago Comic Relief reached out, and supporting such an amazing cause was impossible to say no to.... So here I am, feeling all the mum guilt, but also super excited to be part of something so wonderful."
Support from Friends and Fans
Amanda's Instagram post was flooded with supportive messages from celebrity friends, including Fearne Cotton, who assured her, "You've got this." Radio star Gaby Roslin added, "You have got this you gorgeous soul. So blooming delighted you're back on TV. You’re a wonderful mummy but also a wonderful tv person too and you’ve been missed." Outlander actress Caitriona Balfe also chimed in with words of encouragement.
Reflections on Fertility and Family
Opening up further about her IVF journey, Amanda, married to husband Julian Okines since 2016, described the emotional toll of prioritizing parenthood. She wrote, "Our fertility journey has been long and we know only too well the heartbreak of the hope that turned to hopelessness, the elation that turned to devastation and the strain putting this often-secretive journey before your job, your friends, and your life."
In 2015, she expressed fears about waiting too long to become a mother, saying, "I think there are choices you make as a woman, you can choose to do it by yourself, to do it with somebody even if you are not convinced they are the right person. Or you can wait for the right person and then maybe find it is too late..."
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Despite the nerves, Amanda is embracing her return with excitement. She concluded her post by stating, "I'm ready to take on this day and am so excited to just be 'Amanda' for an afternoon. Wish me luck! ! ! Major props to all you mums, the ones at home and the ones in the office. You lot are all my heroes!" Her story highlights the balancing act many parents face between career aspirations and family life, resonating with audiences worldwide.
