Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin created a stir among residents in the Sydney suburb of Manly on Thursday when he made an unexpected appearance at a local pharmacy. The 68-year-old star, currently in Australia to film an action movie, was seen browsing the shelves at the Malouf Pharmacy on the popular shopping strip known as The Corso.
Recognition and Selfies with Staff
Baldwin was recognized by a retail assistant at the chemist, leading to a friendly interaction where he confirmed his identity with a laugh, saying "I'm Alec Baldwin." The actor, dressed casually in a black denim jacket, matching jeans, and a purple shirt—a departure from his usual polished television persona—then happily posed for selfies with all the staff members.
Scarlett, an employee at the shop, recounted the moment to local media, explaining that a fellow staffer had been staring at Baldwin until he introduced himself. The shop managers even persuaded the A-list celebrity to vote for their pharmacy in upcoming local business awards. It is understood that Baldwin also took photos with other shoppers around the retail area during his visit.
Retirement Announcement and Family Focus
This lighthearted outing comes shortly after Baldwin announced his plans to retire from acting to spend more time with his family. The beloved actor has spoken openly about the tremendous personal suffering he has endured over the past four years following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his film Rust, where the gun was in his hand.
In the wake of that tragedy, Baldwin spent much more time at home with his wife Hilaria and their seven children. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Baldwin expressed a strong desire to step away from his acting career permanently.
Emotional Impact and Legal Proceedings
"For me, because of the situation in New Mexico, that was very painful," Baldwin said. "I wound up staying home a lot. I was home with my kids for three and a half years. I hardly worked at all. And that's just changing now. I'm going to go off and do a bunch of things, but I was home, and I got used to it, and I don't want to leave my house anymore. I don't. I don't want to work anymore. I really don't. I want to retire and stay home with my kids."
Baldwin and Hilaria share children Carmen, 11, Rafael, nine, Leonardo, eight, Romeo, six, Eduardo, four, Maria, three, and Ilaria, two. He also has a 30-year-old daughter, Ireland, from his previous marriage to Kim Basinger. The actor was legally cleared in 2024 in the involuntary manslaughter case related to the shooting, and during the podcast, he emphasized that his primary focus throughout the years of legal proceedings has been the well-being of his family.
Current Film Project in Sydney
Despite his retirement plans, Baldwin was announced last month as a co-star in the new film Kochroach, which is currently filming in Sydney under US director Matt Ross. This American-produced crime film also features prominent actors Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton, marking Baldwin's continued involvement in the industry even as he contemplates stepping back from the spotlight to prioritize his personal life.
