Former Baywatch star David Charvet has been accused of striking and killing a dog with his pick-up truck in a gated community in Malibu, Los Angeles. The incident occurred on Thursday morning and is believed by authorities to have been an accident.
The dog's owner, Vera Errico, said she was walking three dogs when Charvet, 53, hit one of them. The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Department told People magazine that the dogs were reportedly off-leash and ran into the roadway, and that Charvet tried to swerve to avoid them.
Errico and her husband rushed the dog, an 11-year-old white English Labrador named Sunday, to a vet, where it had to be put down. Errico claimed that Charvet did not stop after the collision and filed a hit-and-run report with the L.A. County Sheriff's Office.
However, a law enforcement source told TMZ that Charvet contacted police after the incident, meaning authorities do not consider it a hit-and-run. A deputy has since taken a traffic collision report and is investigating whether the dog was on a lead. Errico insists it was, while Charvet disputes this, saying he swerved to avoid hitting the dog.
Charvet, who rose to fame in the 1990s on Baywatch and later on Melrose Place, offered no comment to TMZ. Representatives for Charvet and the sheriff's office have been contacted for comment.
