Why 48 Teams?
FIFA expanded the tournament from 32 to 48 teams to allow more countries to participate on the global stage. The governing body aimed to increase representation from Africa, Asia, North America, and Oceania, arguing that World Cup involvement can help develop football in less-established regions. This expansion results in 12 groups instead of eight, with the top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 32.
Favorites to Win
Spain, the reigning European champions after defeating England in the Euro 2024 final, are the favorites to win their second World Cup. They head into the tournament on an unbeaten run since 2023, excluding a penalty shootout loss. France, winners in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, are also strong contenders. England, seeking their second World Cup title exactly 60 years after their first, are third favorites. Brazil and Argentina round out the top five, ahead of Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands.
