Jimmy Savile, once celebrated as a beloved BBC personality, was posthumously revealed as one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders. New investigations have uncovered a deeply morbid obsession with the dead, including claims that he crafted rings from the glass eyes of corpses.
Savile's Horrific Crimes
Savile used his position at Top of the Pops and Jim'll Fix It to abuse hundreds of victims, predominantly vulnerable young females. His assaults occurred in dressing rooms, hospitals, schools, and his caravan.
A 2013 report described his crimes as unprecedented in the UK, with recorded offenses dating back to 1955. Yet, he was never brought to justice while alive.
Disturbing Fascination with the Dead
In 2014, police investigated claims that Savile told multiple people his rings were made from glass eyes of corpses provided by friends at Leeds General Infirmary. He confessed to a student nurse about committing sex acts on bodies in the mortuary.
Savile also admitted to interfering with bodies at Broadmoor, removing parts to make jewelry. He wore a pendant necklace made from a corpse's glass eye on the final Top of the Pops.
Missed Opportunities for Justice
Police had chances to charge Savile while alive. In 2009, the Crown Prosecution Service examined four allegations from 1970 but declined action because victims wouldn't support interference. Savile, interviewed under caution, claimed allegations were fabricated for money and threatened legal action.
