Emmerdale Warns Viewers of Distressing Episode

Emmerdale has issued a warning to viewers ahead of a 'distressing' episode that will air on Sunday, 7th June. The episode will depict the sexual assault of Charity Dingle by her blackmailer, Dr Caitlin Todd, played by Caroline Harker.

Storyline Focuses on Female-on-Female Assault

The soap is set to explore the devastating effects of sexual violence and the complex feelings of isolation that survivors can experience, particularly in the context of female-on-female assault. This storyline aims to shed light on an often-overlooked aspect of sexual violence.

In the upcoming weeks, Charity, portrayed by Emma Atkins, will struggle to come to terms with the attack. She will face the difficult choice of confiding in her loved ones or internalising the trauma, highlighting the internal battle many survivors endure.

Producer's Insight

Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper explained the importance of the storyline: 'Charity's storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence, and though this heinous act is fundamentally about power, we'll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman. With little conversation surrounding female-on-female assault, we'll explore the overwhelming feelings of isolation many survivors experience and will examine the disparity between the legal term sexual assault and the fact that many women in Charity's position feel this minimises what's happened to them, because they feel like they've been raped. Though difficult viewing at times, Charity's resilience will inspire hope as she confronts what has happened to her.'

Actress's Perspective

Emma Atkins commented on her character's journey: 'This has been one of the most demanding and significant storylines I've had to navigate as Charity. We know her as a tough, resilient character, but this trauma will expose a deep, raw vulnerability that has been heartbreaking at times to play. I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out or helps others understand the quiet devastation of trauma.'

Viewer Warning Issued

Ahead of the episode, Emmerdale issued a warning on social media: 'In today's episode, (Sunday, June 7) Emmerdale will show scenes depicting sexual violence that viewers could find distressing.'

Schedule Changes Due to World Cup

The episode airs as part of temporary schedule changes on ITV. Both Coronation Street and Emmerdale will air rare Sunday episodes on June 7, between 8pm and 9pm, due to the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier between Spain and England replacing the Friday, June 5, slots. The soaps will also be absent on Tuesday, June 9, because of the England vs Ukraine World Cup qualifying match. On Wednesday, June 10, Emmerdale will air at 7pm, followed by Coronation Street at 7.30pm. Neither soap will air on Thursday, June 11, due to the World Cup opening ceremony featuring Katie Perry and Michael Buble, with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. The biggest change comes on Friday, June 12, when Emmerdale will have an hour-long slot at 8pm, and Coronation Street will also air for an hour at 9pm, reminiscent of the soaps' original scheduling.
