César Awards Organiser Debunks Jim Carrey Impersonator Claims

Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César awards, has firmly rejected conspiracy theories suggesting that a lookalike stood in for Jim Carrey during last week's ceremony in Paris. In a statement to Variety, Caulier labelled the controversy a "non-issue" and highlighted Carrey's deep commitment to the event, which had been in planning since the previous summer.

Months of Preparation and Personal Touch

Caulier revealed that Carrey was "extremely touched" by the invitation from the French Academy and engaged in eight months of ongoing discussions. The actor meticulously worked on his speech in French, repeatedly checking pronunciations with Caulier to ensure accuracy. His dedication was evident when he delivered an emotional, halting French tribute on 26 February, honouring giants of French cinema and tracing his ancestry back to St Malo through his ancestor Marc-François Carré.

To celebrate the honorary award, Carrey brought an entourage of 16 people, including his partner, daughter, grandson, publicist, and 12 close friends and family members. Among them was his old friend Michel Gondry, with whom he has collaborated on films and series, adding a personal reunion to the occasion.

Conspiracy Theories and Social Media Reactions

Despite these personal touches, many commentators noted apparent changes in Carrey's appearance, particularly around the eyes, cheeks, and nose, sparking suspicions that an impersonator was on stage. Drag artist Alexis Stone fuelled the rumours by posting photos of prosthetics on Instagram, implying he was the one presenting the award. Actor Megan Fox added to the speculation with a social media post expressing stress over the authenticity of Carrey's appearance.

Caulier dismissed these claims, emphasising Carrey's "generosity, kindness, benevolence, and elegance" during the event. He stated that the actor's investment and preparation were genuine, making the conspiracy theories baseless.

Carrey's Career and Recent Projects

Jim Carrey, once a top Hollywood comedy star known for roles in The Mask and The Truman Show, has also earned acclaim for serious performances in films like Man on the Moon. In 2022, he hinted at retirement, citing a preference for a quiet life focused on painting and spirituality, but left the door open for exceptional scripts. By 2024, he confirmed a "power rest" rather than full retirement and agreed to reprise his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, humorously noting a need for income.

This incident underscores the persistent nature of celebrity conspiracy theories, even in the face of detailed evidence and official statements. The César awards ceremony remains a highlight in the film calendar, with Carrey's participation adding a memorable chapter to its history.
