Aldi has launched a nationwide search to find Scotland's best grandparents, who are the glue of their family gatherings, to reward them with a month's worth of free shopping.
New research shows traditional home-cooked meals are making a comeback due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, but one generation never gave up on gathering around the table.
Long before air fryers and social media food trends, there is a gran whose soup is loved across three generations or a grandad who is still teaching his grandchildren how to bake.
Celebrating family cooks
From homemade mince and tatties to Sunday roasts that still draw everyone together, grandparents have spent decades proving that the best memories are often made while enjoying a hearty meal with family.
The budget retailer is keen to hear the stories behind Scotland's favourite family cooks and has invited customers to celebrate their grandparents.
Families across Scotland are invited to nominate a special grandparent or grandparent figure whose cooking, kindness, and love of bringing people together has made a lasting impact on their family.
Prize and research
As a reward, Aldi will present three Scottish grandparents with £300 worth of free shopping in their honour.
It comes as research from Barclays’ UK Consumer Spending Report for May 2026 found that 42 per cent of consumers are changing their spending habits due to rising costs and are eating fewer takeaways and meals out as a result.
Over the same four-week period, separate transaction data also recorded a 2.7 per cent decrease in spending money at restaurants, cafés and bakeries.
How to nominate
Aldi launched their nationwide campaign to celebrate the everyday Scottish grandparent heroes on July 22.
To nominate, families need to email scottishcompetition@aldi.co.uk with a short explanation of up to 200 words about why their grandparent deserves to be recognised.
The competition will run from July 22 until August 19 2026. The deadline for entries is 5pm on the closing day.
All applicants must be 18 years old or over and must live in Scotland.
