A Sleepless Night Leads to Lunar Discovery
Mollica captured this image from the balcony of his top-floor flat in London, which offers a panoramic view stretching from the Docklands to central London. In mid-spring, he awoke around 4am and found himself unable to return to sleep. Seizing the opportunity, he used his iPhone 13 Mini against the viewfinder of his telescope to snap the photo. This technique has allowed him to accumulate enough images for a full photography book titled Moon City, highlighting the blend of urban and celestial themes.
The Therapeutic Quiet of London's Early Hours
Reflecting on the experience, Mollica shares, "When I am on my balcony, especially when most of London is sleeping, I feel like the captain of a ship taking to the sky." He notes the ambient sounds of hammers and voices from building sites, bird hoots, or distant sirens, but emphasizes the prevailing quiet. "I find it very therapeutic," he adds, underscoring how this nocturnal photography serves as a calming escape from the city's bustle.
Editing Philosophy and Personal Connections
Mollica insists there were "no dirty tricks" involved in editing the shot. He prefers to make adjustments during the capture process rather than afterward, stating, "I always try to make my adjustments as I am taking pictures, not after, mainly because I can immediately visualise the outcome." This approach ensures authenticity and immediacy in his work. He also recalls a poignant moment with his three-year-old daughter Nora, who believed the moon reflected on a canal was following them, illustrating the moon's enduring place in our collective imagination.
