A man renovating a house has discovered a sealed packet of Golden Wonder crispy bacon flavour crisps dating back more than 40 years behind a kitchen unit. Donnie Maclean shared images of the retro snack on X, formerly Twitter, revealing the packet was still sealed with the crisps visible through transparent windows.
The Discovery
While renovating the kitchen of his recently purchased home, Donnie Maclean pulled a kitchen unit away from the wall and found the vintage packet. He posted pictures of the front and reverse, writing: "Hey @GoldenWonderUK. I'm renovating the house I bought recently. I just pulled a kitchen unit away from the wall and found these beauties! I'm estimating late 1970s. What do you reckon?!"
Packet Details
The 25g red packet features the Golden Wonder logo, the words 'potato crisps', and a transparent window showing the contents. Below are the words 'crispy bacon flavour'. The rear includes a transparent portion, ingredient list, and a message: "Have you tried the latest appetising flavour in the Golden Wonder range? New: Prawn cocktail flavour". It also urges "please keep your country tidy" and provides contact details. A series of numbers stamped on the back suggest the crisps were produced in 1986.
Social Media Reactions
Another X user shared a picture of Golden Wonder crispy bacon flavour bags from 1980 to 1996, noting that Donnie's find matched the second bag, estimated from around 1983. Reactions ranged from humorous to nostalgic. One user commented: "100 per cent you open them a genie will come out! Whether they grant you three wishes or bring about the end of civilisation as we know it is another thing." Another wrote: "Reckon the bacon flavour is so concentrated here that these are perhaps the most baconiest things in the world. Pure unadulterated bacon. Even more than a Frazzle, or a Bacon Fry."
Several users remarked on the full bag, with one saying: "Wow. Remember when they weren't selling bags of air with a couple crisps in the bottom." Another added: "Wow an actual FULL packet of crisps, don't see that these days. Now they are 70 per cent air."
Golden Wonder History
Golden Wonder has been a staple in the British snack market for nearly 80 years. Founded in Stockbridge, near Edinburgh, in 1947, it previously produced Wotsits (now owned by Walkers), Wheat Crunchies, and Nik Naks (now made by KP). In 2006, the company went into administration but was later bought by Northern Irish crisp manufacturer Tayto.
