Science Teacher Permanently Barred from Classroom Over Inappropriate School Photos
A science teacher has been banned from the profession indefinitely after admitting to taking indecent images of himself on school premises during working hours. Benjamin Lillicrap, who worked at The Abbey School in Faversham, Kent from July to November 2023, confessed to photographing his genitalia while on school grounds.
Discovery During Unrelated Police Investigation
In November 2023, during an unrelated police investigation at the school, officers discovered multiple indecent images of Mr Lillicrap's genitalia that had been taken on the school premises. This discovery prompted immediate action from school authorities.
The school suspended Mr Lillicrap and conducted an initial investigation meeting, followed by a formal disciplinary hearing. When questioned directly about whether he had taken pictures of his penis during school time, Mr Lillicrap admitted he had, claiming they were intended for a private individual.
Admission and Apology
Mr Lillicrap stated that no children were present in the room when he took the photos. He apologised for taking the images on school grounds but added: "It was never anything that was meant to come to light." Despite his apology, the school dismissed him for gross misconduct in February 2024 and referred the matter to the Teacher Regulation Agency.
Professional Conduct Panel Findings
A professional conduct panel examined the case and found that Mr Lillicrap had engaged in inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour that was sexual in nature and sexually motivated. Their report stated: "The panel found that Mr Lillicrap's behaviour showed no regard to safeguarding of students, or the potential risk of students, colleagues and/or members of the public finding him taking images of his genitalia when on school premises."
The panel emphasised that this was not appropriate behaviour for a teacher and that he had failed to observe the boundaries expected in his professional role. They noted: "Students have the right to be educated in a safe environment and teachers have a duty of care to ensure that this is the case. By behaving in this way Mr Lillicrap did not provide a safe environment for the students."
Consequences for the Profession
The panel determined that Mr Lillicrap's actions constituted conduct that could bring the teaching profession into disrepute and fell short of expected standards. They concluded he "was wrongly focused on his own sexual gratification rather than on his teaching responsibilities."
As a result of these findings, Benjamin Lillicrap has been banned from teaching indefinitely, marking a permanent end to his career in education following this serious breach of professional conduct and safeguarding protocols.
