Teacher Banned Indefinitely for Inappropriate Conduct with Pupils
A teacher has been permanently barred from the classroom after she shared intimate details of her personal life with students and organised meetings with them during school holidays. Natasha Blackmore, aged 36, who served as the head of design technology at Westfield Academy in Yeovil, Somerset, engaged in conduct that blurred professional boundaries with her pupils.
Unprofessional Relationships and Personal Discussions
A professional conduct panel convened by the Teaching Regulation Agency heard that Ms Blackmore regularly met with a group of five pupils during breaks and lunchtimes. During these sessions, she discussed her nights out, romantic relationships, and personal conflicts. In one particularly concerning instance, she recounted attending a hen night where she consumed alcohol excessively and engaged in smoking and vaping.
The teacher's interactions extended beyond the school environment. She was added to an Instagram group chat with the students, which they used to maintain contact throughout the summer holidays. This digital communication facilitated further inappropriate exchanges outside of educational settings.
Arranging Meetings and Emotional Dependency
Ms Blackmore invited the pupils to meet her new dog during the school holidays, arranging a gathering at Yeovil Recreation Centre after a veterinary appointment. The students admitted creating the group chat specifically to coordinate this meeting, demonstrating how the teacher's actions encouraged informal, personal connections.
One pupil, referred to as Pupil A, described how the relationship evolved into what she termed "some kind of weird relationship" where they confided "everything" to each other. Pupil A felt pressured to attend these breaktime sessions, noting that Ms Blackmore questioned her absence on one occasion, saying, "you ditched us for food when you could have had a nice conversation with us." This created an environment where students perceived the teacher more as a friend than an authority figure.
Investigation and Disciplinary Proceedings
The situation came to light when a parent raised concerns with the headteacher on December 5, 2024, prompting an immediate investigation. During meetings with school officials, Ms Blackmore acknowledged discussing her hen night experiences and joining the Instagram group chat. She defended her actions by claiming the pupils visited her classroom to avoid cold weather and that they provided emotional support following the death of her previous dog.
However, the disciplinary panel found her conduct unacceptable. They concluded she failed to maintain appropriate professional distance, noting she was "over friendly with children" and showed favouritism by allowing a select group to spend breaks in her classroom. The panel emphasised her failure to avoid "personal organised contact with students outside of school hours."
Outcome and Professional Consequences
Following a hearing on March 11, 2025, Ms Blackmore was dismissed from Westfield Academy for gross misconduct. The Teaching Regulation Agency panel determined her actions "fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession" and constituted "unacceptable professional conduct."
As a result, she has been banned from teaching indefinitely, though she retains the right to apply for a review of this prohibition after two years. This case underscores the critical importance of maintaining clear professional boundaries in educational settings to ensure pupil safety and uphold the integrity of the teaching profession.
