Married Teacher Permanently Banned for Inappropriate Communication with Teenage Pupil
A married teacher at an exclusive £46,000-per-year boarding school has been permanently prohibited from teaching after sending a teenage pupil numerous inappropriate late-night messages that were described as "weird" and "un-teacher like." James Samson, a 46-year-old father of two who served as head of geography and a form tutor at the prestigious Luckley House School in Berkshire, engaged in this misconduct over an extended period.
Pattern of Inappropriate Communication
The disciplinary panel heard that Samson initiated contact with the pupil by requesting her personal phone number, claiming he needed it due to email difficulties. This request itself violated school policy, which strictly prohibits teachers from sharing personal contact information with students except in specific circumstances like school trips for safety purposes.
Between February 2023 and May 2024, Samson sent the pupil messages via WhatsApp, email, and text that included concerning content. One message stated: "Shame I couldn’t get you back into my cupboard… To find a folder [with a winky face]." Another read: "I was just looking at you and not listening to [Person X] anyway."
Further messages included invitations such as: "Hey you! You know you are more than welcome to come and chill in my room for revision whenever," and comments like: "Ah that’s nice, I have to say that I always find it far more enjoyable when you’re there too! Not sure why!" The communication extended to inquiries about university applications and suggestions to meet at leisure centers.
Violation of Professional Boundaries
The pupil reported feeling "uncomfortable" with the messages, noting they seemed to have "something behind them" that she couldn't clearly identify. The panel heard that Samson sent messages not only during late-night hours but also on holidays including Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, blatantly disregarding school regulations.
School officials launched an investigation in June 2024 after concerns were raised, resulting in Samson's dismissal approximately one month later. The evidence presented to the panel included over 40 pages of text messages, with one witness describing the behavior as displaying "early signs of grooming."
Formal Findings and Consequences
The disciplinary panel determined that Samson had completely failed to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. His conduct was deemed "highly inappropriate" and fell "significantly short" of the standards expected within the teaching profession. The panel's report explicitly stated that Samson's actions in obtaining the pupil's phone number, corresponding outside of school hours and term time, and sending ill-judged messages represented serious misconduct.
School policy clearly mandates that staff should only communicate with pupils through official school channels such as school email or telephone, with video calls restricted to platforms like Microsoft Teams. The panel emphasized that requesting a pupil's personal mobile number is rarely appropriate and never justified for casual communication.
As a result of these findings, James Samson has been permanently banned from classrooms, marking a definitive end to his teaching career following this serious breach of professional conduct and safeguarding protocols.
