A teacher from Huddersfield has been banned from the profession indefinitely after admitting to attending school under the influence of alcohol on multiple occasions. Emma Taylor-Erwin, 48, formerly a curriculum leader for geography and history at The Mount School in Edgerton, resigned in November 2024 following concerns over her conduct.
Multiple Incidents of Alcohol-Related Misconduct
The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) conduct panel heard that Mrs Taylor-Erwin confirmed she attended school in April 2018 and November 2023 while under the influence of alcohol and/or smelling of alcohol. According to the panel, her behaviour was described as "erratic and abrupt" by one staff member, raising serious alarms about her fitness to teach.
Detailed Allegations and Staff Reports
In April 2018, two staff members reported that Mrs Taylor-Erwin allegedly consumed an alcoholic drink during school hours, specifically on the afternoon of Sports Relief day. Later that month, an individual discussed "difficulties last term" with her, suggesting alcohol involvement, during which she was noted to be "shaking badly" and neither agreed nor denied the allegations.
In November 2023, it was claimed that she was looking after pupils in a class while under the influence of alcohol, further compromising student safety and educational standards. These incidents highlight a pattern of behaviour that the panel found deeply concerning.
Legal Convictions and Panel Findings
The panel also noted that Mrs Taylor-Erwin was convicted at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court in November 2024 for failing to provide a specimen in relation to alleged drink driving. Magistrates imposed a fine, a community order, and requirements for alcohol treatment and rehabilitation activity.
In its decision, the panel stated: "The panel was highly concerned that there could be a repetition of the behaviour described within the allegations it had found proven." It concluded that she had not demonstrated sufficient insight or remorse, and while there were some attempts to address her behaviours, there was no adequate evidence of recognising triggers or implementing systems to prevent recurrence.
Indefinite Prohibition and Future Implications
As a result, Mrs Taylor-Erwin has been prohibited from teaching indefinitely. She may apply for the order to be lifted, but not until January 30, 2031, allowing time for rehabilitation and reflection. This case underscores the strict standards upheld by the TRA to ensure teacher professionalism and student welfare in educational settings.
