Music Teacher Banned Indefinitely After Inappropriate Contact with Former Pupil

A teacher at the prestigious Cheltenham Ladies' College, where annual fees reach £66,870, has been permanently struck off the teaching register following a serious breach of professional boundaries involving a former pupil. Louis Stockton, 32, from Stourbridge in the West Midlands, taught music at the Gloucestershire school from September 2022 until his dismissal in October 2023.

From School Tour to Social Media

The Teaching Regulation Authority professional conduct panel heard that Stockton first met the student, identified only as Pupil A, during a school music tour while she was in Year 13. Their initial contact involved exchanging friendly messages on Microsoft Teams during the educational trip. After returning from the tour, Stockton took the concerning step of creating a dedicated Instagram account specifically to continue private communications with the pupil.

Between 15 July and 3 October 2023, Stockton maintained contact with the former student through both Instagram and Snapchat, directly contravening the school's explicit safeguarding guidance. This policy strictly prohibits teachers from forming social media friendships with current pupils or recent school leavers.

Overnight Stays and Attempted Concealment

In August 2023, after Pupil A had completed her studies but while the formal teacher-pupil professional relationship technically remained in effect until 31 August, Stockton arranged to meet the former student in Cheltenham. They visited the Frog and Fiddle pub together for what he described as "a couple of drinks." When the pupil missed her last train home, Stockton allowed her to stay overnight at his flat, claiming she "fell asleep on the sofa listening to music" and that this arrangement was made "out of convenience."

The situation escalated dramatically on 4 September 2023, when Stockton traveled to London to visit the pupil at her university accommodation during her first weeks as a student. He admitted staying overnight in her bed, initially claiming he expected to find "a sofa or other suitable place to sleep." After spending time on the floor, he eventually joined her in the bed, though he insisted this was a "platonic thing" and that he remained only on "the edge of the bed."

Dishonesty Leads to Prohibition Order

Concerns were formally raised with school authorities on 19 September 2023, when another student reported Stockton's relationship with Pupil A to safeguarding staff. In a message to the former pupil that same day, Stockton acknowledged the gravity of the situation, writing that he was "100% screwed" if the reporting student "tells all."

During subsequent safeguarding meetings on 20 September and 3 October, Stockton repeatedly misled senior staff members, denying he had met the pupil and falsely claiming that all contact had ceased. The panel determined that he had deliberately attempted to conceal the full extent of their relationship and ruled that his conduct was fundamentally dishonest.

While the TRA panel initially concluded that publication of their findings would constitute sufficient sanction, the Secretary of State for Education overruled this decision. The minister determined that Stockton's dishonesty warranted a formal prohibition order to "maintain public confidence in the teaching profession."

Panel Findings and Current Situation

The prohibition order was officially imposed on 21 January 2026, striking Stockton off the teaching register indefinitely. He cannot apply to have this ban set aside until 29 January 2028 at the earliest. In their conclusions, the panel noted that while Stockton demonstrated "a high level of remorse" and described himself as "deeply sorry" for the impact of his actions, his behavior represented a serious failure to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

The panel specifically stated: "The general public would find it concerning a teacher meeting up with a former pupil who had recently left the school, on a purely social one to one basis, staying overnight together and sharing the same bed, despite the relationship being platonic."

Stockton, who described the incident as "an isolated, regrettable, lapse in judgment by a junior teacher who was overwhelmed by a complex situation," now operates a freelance music business called Mannix Music based in Evesham, Worcestershire. The business offers music lessons, workshops, and accompaniment services. Prior to his position at Cheltenham Ladies' College, Stockton worked at Bromsgrove School, where annual fees can reach £55,000.
