Parents Alert Child Services Over High School's Turning Point USA Gathering
Child Services Alerted Over High School TPUSA Event

A conservative youth event organized by Turning Point USA at a Maryland high school has triggered a formal report to child protective services after parents raised alarms about potential risks to teenagers attending the gathering. The incident occurred in Calvert County, where concerned adults argued that excluding parents from the student-focused meeting created an unsafe environment that could leave young people vulnerable to external influence.

Parental Fears Over Student Safety and Influence

During a Calvert County school board meeting on February 12, a parent identified only as Nancy voiced serious apprehension about the TPUSA event. She emphasized that prohibiting adult attendance undermined transparency and violated established youth safety protocols. Nancy specifically highlighted that adolescents are at a critical developmental stage where they might be especially susceptible to persuasive messaging.

"Excluding parents and guardians from a student-focused event creates a lack of transparency and undermines established best practices for youth safety," Nancy stated at the hearing. "Students are widely recognized as a vulnerable population, they are in critical developmental stages, and especially susceptible to influence."

Club President Defends Event Amid Allegations

The 17-year-old president of Calvert County Club America, which is affiliated with Turning Point USA, responded to the concerns by clarifying that some adult presence would be permitted, though limited to parents and volunteers. This restriction was implemented due to online hostility directed at the group, including serious accusations.

"We have been accused of many things," the unnamed president explained. "We have been accused of grooming children - an allegation that a random, unnamed man was president of our group and had certain felony charges. I'm the president of the group. I'm 17, I'm a minor. I can't groom children because I am a child. I don't have any felony charges or convictions."

Turning Point USA's Growing Influence Among Youth

The controversy emerges against a backdrop of increased engagement with Turning Point USA following the assassination of its founder, Charlie Kirk, in September 2025. In the week after Kirk's death, over 54,000 college students reportedly contacted the conservative organization about membership, indicating a significant surge in interest among young people.

The nonprofit describes its mission as educating, training, and organizing students to advocate for fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. It promotes capitalism as "the most moral and proven economic system ever discovered" and has received endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who appeared at a memorial event for Kirk last year.

Legacy of Controversial Views and Leadership Transition

Despite its growing popularity, Turning Point USA has faced criticism for extreme positions expressed by Charlie Kirk during his lifetime. He regularly denounced what he termed the "LGBTQ agenda," urged followers to challenge convictions for hate crimes involving burned Pride or BLM flags, claimed COVID-19 vaccines created "medical apartheid," and suggested the 2022 election was rigged by President Biden.

Following Kirk's death, leadership of the organization has transitioned to his widow, Erika Kirk. The Independent has reached out to both Turning Point USA and the Calvert County Board of Education for additional comments on the recent incident and the ongoing concerns about student events.

It remains unclear whether Nancy personally filed the child protective services report or if other parents were involved. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between parental oversight, student autonomy, and the role of political organizations in educational settings.
