A body believed to be that of a British man who vanished while travelling in Southeast Asia has been discovered by Malaysian authorities.
Discovery in Malaysia
Malaysian Police confirmed the discovery of the body on Wednesday, 7 January 2026. While formal identification procedures are still pending, officials believe the remains are those of Mark Counsell, a 31-year-old from Pontypool. His family back in Wales has been informed of the development.
Last Contact on Christmas Day
Mr Counsell was on a trip through Southeast Asia when he last made contact with his relatives. He spoke to his family on Christmas Day, after which all communication ceased. His disappearance prompted a concerned appeal from Gwent Police, who earlier suggested he could potentially be in Thailand or the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Death Not Treated as Suspicious
Authorities in Malaysia have stated they are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage. The discovery brings a tragic conclusion to an international search that spanned two countries and lasted nearly two weeks. The thoughts of the local community in Pontypool are now with Mr Counsell's family as they await formal confirmation.
