Ukrainian Businessman Accuses GUR of Monaco Assassination Attempt
Ukrainian Businessman Accuses GUR of Monaco Bombing

Ukrainian businessman Vadym Iermolaiev has publicly accused Ukraine's military intelligence agency, the GUR, of orchestrating a bomb attack against him in Monaco that left his partner critically wounded and his son seriously injured. In his first statement since the explosion, Iermolaiev asserted that serving and former GUR officers were directly involved in the attempted assassination.

Details of the Attack

The bomb detonated as Iermolaiev emerged from a building with his partner, Anna, and their 13-year-old child. French investigators identified the suspected bomber as Anastasiia Berezovska, a Ukrainian national accused of planting the explosive device in a public place. The blast was powerful enough to tear apart steel railings and destroy stone steps outside their home. Iermolaiev stated, 'This was not a warning. It was an attempt to kill not only me, but my family as well.'

Days after the attack, Berezovska was found dead near Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities arrested two suspects: Vladyslav Reut, a GUR officer, and Oleksandr Zhykovych, a former law enforcement officer. In a Kyiv court, Reut claimed Zhykovych was responsible for Berezovska's murder. Prosecutors allege the pair forced her at gunpoint into a car and killed her in a forest near the village of Yuriv, about 40 miles west of the capital.

Iermolaiev's Allegations

Iermolaiev rejected the Ukrainian prosecutors' portrayal of the case as the actions of a rogue officer. He stated, 'According to the evidence currently available, the conspiracy extended beyond the direct perpetrators and organisers to include serving GUR officers connected to them, including individuals close to the agency’s current and former leadership.' He emphasized that the attack was not a warning but a deliberate attempt to kill him and his family.

Iermolaiev described his partner's injuries as 'catastrophic and irreversible,' while his son suffered burns, fractures, and other serious injuries. He remains in intensive care and is beginning a long recovery process.

Political and Diplomatic Implications

The case is an embarrassment for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and risks straining relations with European partners if allegations of GUR involvement gain credibility. The incident occurs at a politically sensitive time, with Zelenskyy facing scrutiny over his dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

The motive for the attempted killing remains unclear. In 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Iermolaiev, one of the country's richest businessmen with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $220 million, accusing him of trading alcohol in Russian-occupied Crimea and paying taxes to the Russian treasury. However, Iermolaiev was not known for pro-Russian views or alignment with the Kremlin.

Another theory links the bombing to organized crime, suggesting GUR officers were recruited for a contract killing. Iermolaiev's adult son, Artur, has been accused by Ukrainian authorities of leading a criminal organization involved in large-scale telephone fraud in Dnipro. However, no public evidence connects those allegations to the Monaco attack.
