FIFA Charge £60 for World Cup Final Press Conference with Rio Ferdinand
FIFA Charge £60 for World Cup Final Press Conference

FIFA is charging fans £60 per person to attend a press conference ahead of the World Cup final, featuring appearances from finalists Argentina and Spain, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The event, held in partnership with global sports retailer Fanatics at the Javits Centre in New York City on Friday, comes two days before the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Hefty Price Tag for Fan Access

Hundreds of fans will gain access to the press conference, but they must pay a significant fee. A Fanatics advert stated: "Fans will have the rare opportunity to see both finalists take the stage just days before the World Cup final, hearing directly from players and team representatives as they prepare for sport's biggest match. Special guests: Gianni Infantino and more coming soon." Those wanting an official photograph with Ferdinand must pay an additional £100.

According to The Times, the entry fee covers multiple events across various sports, featuring athletes such as LeBron James, Novak Djokovic, Tom Brady, Serena Williams, and Sir David Beckham. However, the cost has drawn criticism from fans who expected free access to FIFA events.

Ferdinand's Growing Role with FIFA

Rio Ferdinand, 47, has increased his involvement with FIFA. He publicly backed FIFA's handling of the Folarin Balogun ban controversy before later admitting it was wrong, and he hosted the World Cup draw for the expanded 48-team group stage in December. As a 'FIFA legend', he serves in an ambassadorial role for promotional events like the Fanatics collaboration.

Ferdinand's absence from traditional punditry on BBC and ITV has been noted; he instead covers the tournament via his YouTube channel 'Rio Ferdinand Presents'. He posted a video celebrating England's opening goal in their 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Wednesday.

Other Expensive Fan Opportunities

The chance to meet Ferdinand is not the priciest option. A photo with former MLB star Alex Rodriguez costs £239. FIFA and Fanatics defend the pricing, claiming it provides access to a wide range of star athletes and events.
