England U20 international Seb Kelly has been handed a six-match ban by World Rugby after headbutting an opponent during the Junior World Championship semi-final against South Africa. The incident occurred in the first half when Kelly, a flanker, was caught headbutting Junior Springboks full-back Luan Giliomee while both players were on the ground following a tackle. Kelly was shown a permanent red card, reducing England to 14 men, and they subsequently lost the match 53-37.
Widespread Condemnation
Kelly's actions drew immediate criticism from rugby fans and pundits, with many describing the act as "absolutely disgusting" and calling for a lengthy suspension. The 20-year-old Sale Sharks back-rower was summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee, which issued a six-match ban. World Rugby stated: "In determining the sanction for Seb Kelly, the FPRC found that the player struck his opponent, who was on the ground in a vulnerable position, with his head. On that basis the FPRC decided that the red card was warranted and proposed a mid-range sanction (10 matches) and did not award full mitigation, resulting in a sanction of six matches. The player has accepted the sanction."
Impact on England and Kelly
Kelly will miss England's third-place play-off against New Zealand U20s on Saturday, as well as two Premiership Rugby Cup fixtures and three Sale FC games. Meanwhile, Giliomee, who was also sent off for making contact in the air, had his red card rescinded.
Other Suspensions Announced
World Rugby also handed out three other suspensions from the Junior World Championship. Wales U20s star Luke Evans received a three-match ban after being shown a 20-minute red card for a dangerous tackle against Australia. The Scarlets forward's suspension will be reduced to two games if he completes World Rugby's Coaching Intervention Programme. Ireland U20s full-back Harry Waters was also hit with a three-match ban for "recklessly charging his opponent with a high degree of danger, making direct forceful contact with his head, knocking him to the ground." USA prop Alfie Booth received a two-match suspension for making direct shoulder-to-head contact with an opponent during his side's defeat to Japan. Like Evans and Waters, Booth's suspension will be reduced by one game following completion of the Coaching Intervention Programme.
