Emergency services rushed to Manchester city centre after a man climbed onto the roof of a tram near Piccadilly station. The incident led to the suspension of Metrolink services on the Ashton line and the closure of part of London Road.

Incident Details

Police were called to Aytoun Street at 7:53 am following reports of a man on a bridge. Multiple units from Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene. The man was seen on the roof of a Metrolink tram, with officers nearby.

Response and Resolution

The area around Piccadilly Station Approach saw a large emergency services presence. Trams on the Ashton line were halted while police worked to resolve the situation. The incident concluded safely by 9:30 am when the man was detained.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We deployed several units along with other emergency services to London Road in Manchester city centre at about 8 am this morning after reports a man was on a bridge. The incident concluded after about 90 minutes when a man was detained under the Mental Health Act."

Normal tram services resumed shortly after the incident ended. The man was taken into custody for assessment under mental health provisions.
