A man was taken to hospital following a rescue operation at the Pier Head Mersey Ferries terminal in Liverpool, the Liverpool ECHO has learned. Emergency services were called to the scene around midnight on Sunday, July 19, after reports of a fall.
Incident Details
An eyewitness reported that the man fell close to the footbridge and landed on a concrete block just inches from the River Mersey. The response involved HM Coastguard, Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, and the North West Ambulance Service.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard confirmed: "At 11.59pm last night, Saturday, July 18, HM Coastguard assisted Merseyside Police with an incident at Mersey Pier Head. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Crosby and Wirral were sent, along with a vessel from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. The incident concluded at around 1.18am this morning."
Eyewitness Account
The eyewitness described the emergency response as "substantial," with first responders arriving shortly after the incident. Three members of the public initially helped the injured man and called 999. The response included hazardous area response team ambulance units, 10 coastguard personnel, and a fire service marine rescue unit.
The injured man sustained suspected neck and back injuries and was recovered from the river bank using rope rescue equipment before being transported to hospital.
