A five-year-old girl has tragically died after being hit by a van in Newry, Northern Ireland. Police confirmed the child was taken to hospital following the collision on Sunday evening but later succumbed to her injuries.
Collision details
Officers received a report at approximately 9.25pm on June 21 of a collision involving a black Ford Tourneo van and a child in the Springfarm Heights area of Newry. The driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Detective Inspector Stewart from the Police Service's Collision Investigation Unit said: "Officers attended, and the driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene. She remains in custody at this time as enquiries continue into the circumstances of the collision."
Road closures and appeal for witnesses
The Carnagat Road remains closed at its junctions with Springfarm Heights and Stony Hill. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or other footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.
