Services at Edinburgh Airport are gradually returning to normal after a security alert forced an evacuation on Friday evening. The incident, which involved a potentially suspicious package, prompted a swift response from authorities.
Security Alert Details
An explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed to the airport at approximately 6:50 pm on Friday after Police Scotland received reports of a suspicious package. The terminal was evacuated, a police cordon was established, and nearby roads were closed as a precaution.
On Saturday, police confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious. A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: "EOD attended and the items were made safe. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."
Impact on Passengers
The airport reopened around 3:00 am on Saturday, but warned of knock-on effects throughout the day. Passengers arriving on Saturday morning faced long queues that extended outside the terminal building. By mid-afternoon, an airport spokesman reported that services had largely returned to normal.
