A section of a North East city centre was cordoned off following reports of a potentially suspicious package at a local library. Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and paramedics, responded to Clayport Library in Durham city centre on Thursday morning.
Cordon Lifted After No Threat Found
The cordon remained in place for over an hour before emergency crews concluded there was no cause for concern and deemed the area safe. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: 'We received reports of a potentially suspicious package at Clayport Library, in Durham City, at around 11am yesterday (Thursday, June 18). Emergency services attended and concluded there was no cause for concern. A cordon which had been put in place was lifted at around 12.15pm.'
Fire and Ambulance Services Respond
A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 11.06am today (June 18) to a police incident at Clayport Library in Durham city centre. One fire engine from Durham Fire Station attended but no action was taken by crews. Firefighters left the scene at 12.32pm.' A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: 'We were called to support an incident in Millennium Place in Durham at 11.11am on 18 June. We dispatched an officer, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a duty officer, who were all stood down by our police colleagues once the area was deemed safe.'
