Chris Vui banned four years for doping violation

World Rugby has confirmed that former Bristol Bears lock Chris Vui has been banned for four years after failing an out-of-competition drugs test, according to Bristol Live. The 33-year-old, who captained Samoa at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, has not played professional rugby since September 2023.

Details of the Violation

Vui's urine sample, taken on August 1, 2023 during a pre-World Cup training camp with Samoa, was found to contain 19-norandrosterone at a concentration of 7.8 ng/mL, nearly four times the legal limit of 2 ng/mL. This substance indicates the use of the anabolic steroid nandrolone, which enhances performance by building muscle mass.

The A Sample was analyzed at the WADA-accredited Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory in Utah, USA, between August 25 and September 26, 2023. World Rugby provisionally banned Vui on September 27, 2023, and on April 10, 2025, the World Rugby Judicial Committee found him guilty of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation, imposing a four-year ban backdated to September 27, 2023.

Vui's Challenge and CAS Ruling

Vui contested the ban, taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in January 2026. His legal team raised procedural complaints, arguing that independent expert Dr. Catalani could not monitor every stage of the B Sample testing and that lab director Dr. Daniel Eichner had a conflict of interest as a member of World Rugby's Anti-Doping Advisory Committee. However, the World Rugby Judicial Committee dismissed these claims as 'too speculative and too lacking in hard evidence'.

Vui's team also submitted a polygraph test strongly indicating he was unaware of taking a banned substance, along with character references and his record of nine negative drug tests over seven years. Despite this, CAS upheld World Rugby's decision.

Impact and Response

Vui was a key player for Bristol Bears, making 101 appearances for the Gallagher Premiership club. When asked about his disappearance without explanation, Bristol Bears cited a private family issue, according to Bristol Live. A World Rugby spokesman stated that the delay in publishing the ban was due to circumstances outside the governing body's control.
