Bystander Takes Down Shoplifter in Ardwick

A Stockport man, identified only as Nick, 36, intervened to stop an alleged aggressive shoplifter at a Londis store in Ardwick on Sunday, July 12. The incident, captured on CCTV, shows Nick calmly approaching the man, using a self-defence technique to bring him to the ground, and then escorting him out of the store without further incident.

Nick told the M.E.N that he was waiting in the queue when he noticed the man pulling items from shelves and becoming confrontational with staff. “He was really aggressive and confrontational, going 'I'll take what I want',” Nick said. The cashier tried to intervene, but the man refused to leave, leading to a scuffle that upset other customers.

Self-Defence Technique Used

Nick, who practices sparring at the gym for fitness, employed a leg sweep to subdue the shoplifter. “I used a self-defence technique called a leg sweep, where he was not going to get injured or come to any harm,” he explained. After pinning the man down, Nick patted him down out of concern he might be carrying a knife. The shoplifter then left without further trouble.

Staff at the Londis store told Nick that the man was well-known in the area and expressed their gratitude. “They told me I could come by for a reward,” Nick said.

Call to Action for Bystanders

Nick, who says he usually keeps to himself, felt compelled to act. “I like to keep myself to myself. I don't get involved in things. But that lad was not going to leave,” he said. He urged others to step in when witnessing similar situations: “As a member of the public there are times where you should step in and this was one of them.”

The incident highlights the role bystanders can play in preventing crime and ensuring public safety, especially when store staff are outnumbered or at risk.
