Maitiu Mág Tighearnán, hailed as a hero after intervening in a knife attack in North Belfast, appeared exclusively on Good Morning Britain to recount the harrowing incident. The attack occurred on Monday night, June 8, in the Kinnaird Avenue area, where the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, was allegedly set upon by Hadi Alodid, 30. Alodid has since been charged with attempted murder, threats to kill, and possession of a knife.
The Moment of Discovery
Maitiu and a friend were driving to a petrol station when they stumbled upon the scene. Initially thinking it was a fight, they quickly realized the severity. Maitiu grabbed his son's hurling stick from the car and confronted the suspect. Recalling the moment, he said, 'There was blood everywhere. The first thing is, right, that man needs help.'
Instinct and Community Spirit
Reflecting on his actions, Maitiu attributed his response to his upbringing in West Belfast. 'It's a natural reaction for me and most people I know from where we grew up,' he explained. He emphasized the strong community spirit in Belfast, noting that despite recent negative attention, neighborhoods like North and West Belfast are places where people help each other.
Overwhelming Response
A fundraising campaign was launched in recognition of Maitiu's bravery, but he admitted the attention has been overwhelming. 'I try to keep a low profile. I don't like too much attention on myself,' he confessed. He expressed a desire to visit the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, and has been in touch with his family. 'We're just glad we were able to intervene when we could,' he added.
Support for the Victim
During the GMB interview, Maitiu and the fundraiser organizer announced a new fundraising effort for Ogilvie. Maitiu pledged an initial £10,000 to kickstart the campaign. 'If it was any of our family, we would hope someone would do the same,' he said.
