Violence erupted among Argentina supporters in Atlanta ahead of the World Cup semi-final against England, with fans throwing glass bottles, benches, bins, and tables at each other. The clash occurred during a pre-match rally known as a Banderazo, attended by around 10,000 fans in Downtown Atlanta.
Shocking footage shared on social media captured the brawl, which reportedly involved rival supporters of the San Lorenzo and Huracan clubs. Police were forced to intervene, and at least one man was handcuffed and led away by Atlanta officers.
Background of Tensions
Recent tensions between these fan groups date back to 2018, when violent scenes erupted in Nizhny Novgorod and Saint Petersburg during the previous World Cup. The incident comes as the FBI has classed the England-Argentina match as the highest risk of the tournament, following meetings with officials and local police.
The FBI, FIFA, and police met on Monday to discuss the historic divide between England and Argentina. Precautions include separate entry gates for the two sets of supporters, even if they are not seated apart inside the stadium. However, tickets sold through resale have made it difficult to keep fans completely separated.
Policing and Fan Behavior
Chief Constable Mark Roberts, lead of football policing for the National Police Chiefs' Council, praised England fans' behavior in the US and Mexico. He said: "The behaviour of the England fans in the US and Mexico has been outstanding throughout this tournament, and Saturday night was no different. The atmosphere during the game was passionate but friendly, with no animosity between fans at the end of the match."
He contrasted this with incidents in the UK, adding: "It’s a real shame that the same cannot be said about the behaviour of fans back home here in the UK. Over Saturday evening, into the early hours of Sunday morning we had over 500 incidents reported, with more than 100 arrests across the country."
Enhanced Security Measures
The Atlanta Police Department issued a statement on increased policing: "As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming FIFA World Cup semi-final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture. Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone."
The match kicks off at 3pm local time (8pm UK time) and is expected to draw intense global attention.
