A 50-year-old member of staff at the University of Aberdeen has been arrested and charged in connection with a social media post about the late Ann Widdecombe, who died last Thursday at age 78. Police Scotland initially reported no criminality in the comments but later reassessed the situation.
Police Scotland Statement
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received reports on Saturday 11 July 2026 relating to a post made online. Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged in connections. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
Prime Minister's Response
Outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer commented on the broader implications, stating: "I believe we must do more to defend our democracy. I have tasked officials across government to identify the best mechanisms for taking this work forward, so it can move as quickly as possible, and I hope the whole House can unite behind that in the months ahead."
Tribute to Ann Widdecombe
Mr Starmer also suggested that Ms Widdecombe, who served as an MP for 23 years until 2010, could be honoured with a plaque in the House of Commons, similar to those for murdered MPs Jo Cox and Sir David Amess. He added: "It is chilling that during my time in this Parliament, 11 years, three serving or former MPs have been murdered. I look across at the shield for our dear friend Jo Cox and the shield for Sir David Amess that sits behind me. I know this is a House matter, so this is my personal view, but I do believe it’d be fitting for the House to consider a similar tribute to Ann."
Terrorism Investigation
Counter-terrorism police confirmed that Ms Widdecombe died in a 'targeted attack' on Tuesday. A 28-year-old white British man was initially arrested on suspicion of murder and later re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
