A dramatic and highly publicised confrontation outside a hospital in Taiwan has escalated into a bitter legal battle over the guardianship of a 102-year-old billionaire. The incident, captured on video, shows the elderly tycoon, surnamed Wang, being hurriedly removed from Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei's Zhongshan district by a group of his relatives.
Marriage to Caregiver Triggers Family Dispute
The dispute was ignited earlier this year when Mr Wang, a centenarian, reportedly married his long-time caregiver, a 69-year-old woman surnamed Lai. Ms Lai had worked for the tycoon for an extensive period of seventeen years prior to their union in January. This unexpected marriage immediately raised concerns among Mr Wang's ten adult children, comprising three sons and seven daughters.
The family members allege that Ms Lai exploited their father's declining mental capacity to orchestrate the marriage and transfer valuable property assets to herself and her two children. They claim Mr Wang has exhibited significant signs of confusion and uncharacteristic behaviour in recent months, casting doubt on his ability to provide valid consent.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds Outside Hospital
Footage broadcast by Formosa TV on 3 February depicts the chaotic scene. Mr Wang, who is wheelchair-bound, had arrived at the hospital for a medical appointment accompanied by his new wife. Upon their arrival, a waiting crowd of his children, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren swiftly seized control of his wheelchair.
A physical scuffle erupted as Ms Lai attempted to intervene and prevent the family from taking her husband. The caregiver sustained injuries during the confrontation and required treatment at the hospital's emergency department. She was ultimately left behind as the family loaded Mr Wang into a waiting vehicle and departed.
Conflicting Narratives and Legal Actions
In the aftermath, starkly conflicting narratives have emerged. Ms Lai contacted the police, alleging that her husband had been taken against his will, constituting unlawful detention. Conversely, the Wang family described their actions as a necessary "rescue" mission, asserting that their father was being held "hostage" by his caregiver.
The legal fallout has been swift and complex. Ms Lai has filed formal complaints alleging unlawful detention, assault, and defamation, and is seeking a protective order. In a countermove, Mr Wang's children have initiated civil proceedings to annul the marriage, recover any transferred assets, and obtain legal guardianship over their father.
They argue that any consent given by Mr Wang regarding the marriage or asset transfers is legally invalid due to his purported cognitive impairment.
Police Intervention and Ongoing Stalemate
Police from the Zhongshan Second Police Station visited the residence where Mr Wang was taken. Officer Chan Shih-Hsien reported that the elderly man did not appear to be held against his will at that location. Authorities have noted that both the spouse and the children possess legal standing in the matter, leading them to refrain from further immediate intervention as the dispute is fundamentally a civil guardianship battle.
Mr Wang's fourth son expressed relief to reporters, stating his father was "back home" in time for the Lunar New Year celebrations. The case remains unresolved, poised for a protracted legal fight in the courts that will determine control over the tycoon's welfare and substantial estate.
