A 21-year-old man from Cardiff has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for defrauding an elderly woman out of £20,000 by impersonating a police officer. Cleonest Massera, of Pentwyn, Cardiff, contacted the victim in November 2025, claiming she had been the victim of a scam and offering to safeguard her valuables.
How the Fraud Unfolded
Massera arranged for a supposed police courier to collect cash, jewellery, and bank cards from the woman's home. The victim was instructed not to inform any family or friends, under the threat of being arrested for perverting the course of justice. The fraud occurred between November 27 and November 30, 2025.
Relatives of the victim became aware of the situation and alerted authorities, leading to Massera's arrest within days. He was subsequently charged and found guilty of fraud by false representation following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court in June 2026.
Sentencing and Police Warning
Massera was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, July 6, 2026, to 32 months in jail. Detective Constable Joseph Davies of South Wales Police commented: “We continue to urge people to remain vigilant and to look out for their vulnerable relatives that may be susceptible to online fraud. This investigation is a reminder of our commitment to holding fraudsters accountable and protecting vulnerable members of our communities.”
South Wales Police emphasised that fraudsters use various tactics to obtain bank details. They advise: “Should you receive any text messages purporting to be from your bank asking you to click on ‘links’ please do not do this. Delete it and contact your bank immediately. Never give banking or personal details to anyone you don’t know or trust. This information is valuable so make sure you protect it. Police officers will never ask anyone to withdraw cash or ask for personal banking details.”
