A North Tyneside convenience store owner says he is "upset" after an attempted break-in at his shop in the early hours of Saturday. Go Local on Glebe Road in Forest Hall has not yet been open for three weeks but it has already been targeted by would-be thieves.
Owner alerted to break-in
Owner Raja Yagyanarayanan told ChronicleLive he had been alerted to the break-in at around 3:30am on Saturday morning. Raja got there in less than 15 minutes but by the time he arrived, the thieves had scarpered.
He says that CCTV showed three people trying to gain entry to the shop, smashing the shutter and then the window. However, they did not manage to gain entry and nothing was stolen.
First business targeted
Nevertheless, the business owner said: "I'm upset. It's my first business, I've put all my effort into it." He added that police were at the shop earlier this morning and have opened an investigation into the matter, and have taken the CCTV footage.
Go Local was open as normal when we visited around 10am, and the smashed windows have been temporarily boarded up.
Recent opening
The convenience store opened on July 1, despite a petition amassing 500 signatures calling against it being granted an alcohol licence. ChronicleLive has contacted Northumbria Police for comment.
