A Cuban national residing in Florida has been accused of orchestrating a substantial meat theft from two separate grocery stores, only to discard the majority of his ill-gotten gains in a fit of jealous rage after catching his girlfriend cooking with another man, according to law enforcement officials.
High-Value Meat Heist at Publix Stores
Heannys O. Alvarez Reyna, a 30-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, was captured on surveillance footage on January 5th committing two distinct thefts at Publix supermarkets in Flagler County. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office detailed that the first incident occurred at approximately 7:43 p.m. at the Belle Terre Crossings Publix location, where Reyna allegedly made off with beef and lamb products valued at $1,574.86.
In a remarkably brazen follow-up act, less than twenty minutes later, the suspect targeted the Island Walk at Palm Coast Publix. During this second theft, he reportedly stole an assortment of premium meats including pork, top sirloin, brisket, and tenderloin, alongside personal care items, with the total value reaching $2,084.
Jealous Discovery Leads to Discarded Evidence
Following his stealing spree, Reyna drove directly to his girlfriend's residence, where he made an unexpected and distressing discovery. Authorities state that he found his girlfriend in the company of another man, with both individuals engaged in cooking activities together. Overwhelmed by this revelation, Reyna allegedly disposed of nearly all the stolen meat in an emotional response to the domestic situation.
Detectives from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office successfully identified Reyna as the primary suspect in both theft incidents through their investigation. During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the unusual sequence of events that connected his criminal activities with his personal relationship turmoil.
Sheriff's Pun-Filled Commentary on the Case
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly offered characteristically colourful commentary on the unusual case through an official news release shared on social media platforms. "This wasn't just a case of someone trying to 'meat' their budget," Sheriff Staly remarked. "This was a calculated, 'high-steaks operation' that left two stores with significant losses."
The sheriff continued with his meat-themed wordplay, noting that "while this suspect's selection was choice, his method wasn't kosher." He added pointedly that "he really tried to milk the system and by now he's found out that the Green Roof Inn does not serve premium meats."
Legal Consequences and Immigration Status
Reyna now faces serious legal repercussions for his actions. He has been formally arrested and charged with felony retail theft, a significant criminal offence under Florida law. Following his apprehension, authorities transported him to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is currently being held.
His detention includes a substantial $5,000 bond requirement, compounded by an additional U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. This immigration hold suggests potential complications regarding his legal status in the United States as a Cuban national residing in Florida.
Sheriff Staly concluded his statements with a final culinary-themed warning to potential shoplifters: "His relationship may have been past its prime, but stealing isn't the way to cure what ails you. The bottom line is this: If you steal from our stores, we will catch you and you will 'meat' the consequences."
The case highlights both the serious nature of organised retail theft and the sometimes unpredictable human elements that can influence criminal behaviour. Law enforcement officials emphasise that substantial thefts from local businesses will be investigated thoroughly and prosecuted vigorously, regardless of any unusual personal circumstances that might accompany the crimes.
