Bird Poo Scam Alert: How I Almost Had My Phone Stolen in London
Bird Poo Scam Alert: Phone Theft Trick in London

During my first visit to London, I nearly fell victim to a clever distraction theft known as the 'bird poo scam'. While walking past Downing Street towards Trafalgar Square, a well-dressed young woman tapped my shoulder and pointed out what appeared to be bird droppings in my hair. She and her companion offered to help clean it off with a wet wipe.

How the Scam Works

The bird poo scam typically involves scammers spraying a liquid that resembles bird droppings on a victim. The substance can be white, black, brown, or even green, and may even smell like real bird excrement. The goal is to create a sense of disgust and urgency, distracting the victim while an accomplice steals valuables such as phones, wallets, or jewellery.

My Close Call

I was disgusted and ready to accept their help, but my boyfriend felt uneasy and quickly moved us away. Later, we realised the 'bird poo' was only on a tiny part of my hair, and I had no droppings on my cap or jacket. A quick online search confirmed it was a known scam.

Common Tactics

  • Two well-dressed individuals alert you to fake bird poo on your hair, jacket, or bag.
  • They offer wet wipes or assistance, creating a distraction.
  • While you focus on cleaning, one of them steals your belongings.

What They Steal

Victims have reported losing phones, credit cards, purses, and even necklaces. I was wearing gold jewellery and carrying a camera and phone, but fortunately, nothing was taken. The scammers may also use bumping or confusion to snatch phones unnoticed.

Safety Tips for Tourists

If a bird poos on you, do not accept help from strangers. Instead, move away quickly and clean it yourself later. In any major city, always keep your bag sealed and close, hold your phone securely, and avoid displaying valuables. Stay aware of your surroundings and do not hesitate to walk away from anyone who approaches you unexpectedly.
