Deadly Shooting Incident Outside Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
A violent shooting attack near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday has left one person dead and four others injured, according to Turkish authorities. The incident involved a gunfight between three attackers and police forces outside a building housing the consulate.
Attackers Neutralized in Police Response
Istanbul governor Davut Gul confirmed that the three attackers were neutralized during the confrontation. One attacker was killed at the scene, while two others sustained injuries. Additionally, two police officers suffered minor wounds during the exchange of gunfire.
Video footage from Reuters captured the intensity of the situation, showing a police officer drawing his weapon and seeking cover as gunshots echoed through the area. One individual was visibly covered in blood following the violent encounter.
Weapons and Investigation Details
Governor Gul stated that the attackers were armed with rifles and guns when they attempted to carry out the assault on the consulate. Security forces quickly sealed off the surrounding area to contain the situation and begin their investigation.
Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi identified the attackers as terrorists and revealed that two of the three assailants are believed to be brothers. He further disclosed that one attacker had connections to an organization that exploits religion, while another had a prior drug-related criminal record.
The terrorists arrived in Istanbul using a rental vehicle from Izmit, according to the minister's statement regarding their movements prior to the attack.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Turkey's Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has immediately launched an investigation into the shooting incident. A statement released on social media platform X confirmed that three prosecutors have been assigned to the case - one deputy chief public prosecutor and two public prosecutors.
The prosecutors promptly arrived at the scene in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district to begin their examination of the evidence. Minister Gürlek emphasized that the investigation is being conducted meticulously and in a multifaceted manner in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies.
Diplomatic Context and Israeli Response
Governor Gul noted that no Israeli diplomats were present in Turkey at the time of the attack, with neither the consulate in Istanbul nor the embassy in Ankara staffed by diplomatic personnel. The consulate has reportedly been without stationed personnel for nearly three years, occupying only one or two floors within the high-rise building according to local media reports.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry acknowledged awareness of reports regarding gunfire near their consulate in Istanbul but provided no immediate additional commentary on the developing situation.
