Twin Sisters Discover They Have Different Fathers in Rare Phenomenon
Twin Sisters Discover Different Fathers in Rare Case

A pair of twin sisters have discovered they have different fathers in what is believed to be a world-first case. Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne, both aged 49, learned the identities of their biological fathers through DNA testing after years of uncertainty about their parentage. Conceived naturally, they grew in the same womb and were born minutes apart, but are technically half-sisters rather than biological twins.

Rare Phenomenon

This results from an extremely rare phenomenon called heteropaternal superfecundation, where a woman produces more than one egg during the same cycle, both fertilised by sperm from different men, with both embryos surviving pregnancy. The findings were revealed on BBC Radio 4 series The Gift, which reports only around 20 cases have been identified worldwide. The Osbourne sisters are the only documented twins with separate fathers in the UK.

Emotional Discovery

Lavinia told podcast presenter Jenny Kleeman: "She was the one thing that belonged to me, the one thing that I was certain about, the one thing that I was sure of. And then she wasn't." Michelle, however, said she "wasn't surprised" by the findings. "I'm still in amazement that this can actually happen – it's super weird, super odd, super rare – but it makes sense."

Background and Childhood

Specialists believe some cases may go undetected unless there is reason to question paternity. The sisters made the discovery after a difficult childhood, raised by a mother who was a vulnerable 19-year-old when she gave birth in 1976 in Nottingham. Michelle revealed their mother had "suffered abuse at the hands of [her] stepfather" and had been "in and out of foster care and children's homes throughout her childhood." Their mother always told them their father was a man named James, but the twins never met him. When they were five, their mother left to study in London, leaving them with her best friend's mother, whom they called "grandma." Lavinia described her as "strict - not very emotional, not very cuddly." James returned when they were mid-teens after Lavinia tracked him down, but Michelle never felt certain he was her father.

DNA Test Results

Michelle bought a DNA test kit in late 2021, and results arrived on 14 February 2022—the day their mother, suffering from dementia, died. The test revealed James was not her father. After investigating her backstory, Michelle discovered her father was Alex, the brother of a woman who was friends with their mother. Lavinia later took a DNA test after meeting Alex's family and feeling she was not blood-related. When she discovered her twin was her half-sister, Lavinia was devastated and furious. "I was angry with Michelle for having me go through this, because I just didn't want this reality." She soon found James was not her father either; instead, it was a man named Arthur, who lives in west London.

Building Relationships

Lavinia has built a relationship with Arthur, meeting several times a month, often alongside Michelle. Michelle's father, Alex, struggles with substance abuse. "He's mine, I'm his, but I didn't feel like he's someone I need to take forward in my future with me," she said. "I just needed to know."
